May Day rally on the Oregon Capitol steps
SALEM, Ore. – Members of Oregon’s Latino community rallied in Salem on Sunday in honor of May Day, the traditional day to rally for labor rights.
People carried signs that read “Oregon works because immigrants work” and “No human is illegal.”
The protestors want state lawmakers to pass immigration reform laws, including a law that would allow undocumented students to get in-state tuition at public universities.
“We are working here to build power for our Latino community,” said Francisco Lopez with CAUSA Oregon. “We are very much a presence in this state.”
Another rally is planned for Monday on the Capitol steps.
