Vandalism mars effort to clear notorious park of crime

""

SALEM, Ore. - A local community on a crusade to clean up a park after a deadly shooting is now dealing with more crime, and this time it's vandalism.

At Northgate Park there was paint sprayed everywhere over the weekend - on the trees, on the sidewalk and on the fence. Monday morning, crews painted over the graffiti and scrubbed the trees.

Alex Seufert, a 16-year-old who volunteers with the city's parks department, has worked hard to reclaim the park from crime. Last May, three young people were shot there while sitting on a park bench, one of whom was Seufert's friend, 21-year-old Montez Bailey.

Since then, Seufert says the community has really come together to help clean up the park but he is worried the next target could be the new Peace and Forgiveness Garden where Bailey's family planted a tree in the young man's memory.

"We need to have a neighborhood watch," he said. "We used to have one and it suddenly disappeared. I mean, we have signs up but there's no neighborhood watch."

Seufert plans to pitch his idea at a meeting on Tuesday and says he will be patrolling the park in his free time.

cleaning up vandalism sounds like a good job for people who are on welfare.  They should make themselves useful if they want to suckle from the public teat.

This neighborhood has gone to crap. Between the POS gangbangers and the houses with 8-10 cars parked around with nothing but 10+ 20-something year olds living there (gee.. drug house?)... an apartment complex that has gun shots going off every couple days and only has signs in spanish advertising... and they want to waste time trying to clean up the park? It's like putting lipstick on a pig. (Don't confuse that with Sarah Palin pls) They need to clean up this neighborhood before wasting time trying to just clean up a small park.

What does Spanish advertizing have to do with the clean up of the park? I'm sure there is also English advertizing there. So to what conclusions do we deduce from those????

No... the signs up on that complex are in spanish only. But then... I guess you either didn't read the message or are just too fing dense to actually read the comment.

It is just one more generalized, racist remark against Hispanics regardless if they were born here or are legal citizens.

KATU, please go back to your previous layout.  This one is completely irresponsible!

Clearly you were not comfortable taking up the challenge yesterday that suggested you put it up for a vote.

The only racist appears to be you, in seeing racism. The problem is gangbangers and illegals in that neighborhood. Legal, law-abiding citizens are trying to change things around. The gangs and the illegals who do not contribute to community involvement are what is holding them back. If you have a problem and choose to see it as racism, then maybe you should seek some help for your racism.

I think it's wonderful that Alex volunteers to improve his community. For a 16yo to be so concientous shows he will do something with his life.

Other areas have had 20 incidents in one night - the Norteno gang's work.

So, yes, the Latino community is notorious for allowing their kids to run with spray cans.
