Oregon State Police say they will stage a special enforcement effort focusing on new traffic laws for cell phones and moving over for emergency vehicles for one day along Interstate 5 in the Salem area.

Troopers plan to increase patrols on the freeway in Marion County from 6 a.m. to midnight Wednesday to check for compliance with traffic laws.

State police say the so-called "move over" law has been in effect for six years.

But it was recently changed to require drivers to move over or slow down at least 5 mph below the posted limit for tow trucks or roadside assistance vehicles in addition to police cars, fire trucks and ambulances.

Troopers will also be on the lookout for drivers using cell phones to talk or text. Only handsfree phones are allowed.
